Creating a future of possibility.
“We are so excited to be able to get a member of our team certified… moving beyond the fundraising phase and putting action behind our passion for LoveYourBrain." - Krissy Danburg
If you’ve been following our story about Jarrid and Krissy Danburg, you know they’ve made an incredible contribution to our work.
By raising over $9,200 for LoveYourBrain, they’ve supported free programs and resources that improve the lives of people affected by concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI). But their impact goes beyond the dollars donated.
Krissy and Jarrid are also making a commitment to the TBI community in Pittsburgh.
When organizing their fundraising plans to participate in LoveYourBrain’s MindfulMarch campaign, they saw an opportunity to create local TBI support, beyond their financial impact. The challenge was simple: if their studio community could raise $2,500 for LoveYourBrain, YogaSix South Hills would both match this donation and send a teacher through LoveYourBrain’s one-of-a-kind, certification-level Yoga for Traumatic Brain Injury Training.
Research shows that yoga is a powerful tool for healing after brain injury. Inspired by this, Krissy and Jarrid saw that with proper training their studio could be a part of making yoga inclusive and accessible.
LoveYourBrain’s research-based trainings provide teachers with a foundation to share adaptive and accessible practices with the brain injury community. By sending Sam to learn about brain injury, the symptoms, and ways to adapt yoga, meditation, and breath practices for brain injury, YogaSix South Hills is ensuring they are empowered to support their communities.
The YogaSix South Hills community responded. This March they surpassed their fundraising goal, and in June, Sam attended LoveYourBrain’s 20-hour, online training along with 46 other yoga teachers, clinicians, and practitioners from around the world.
“As a human who hasn't experienced a traumatic brain injury this training offered education and lived experience insights into the dynamic nature those who have experienced TBI will move through the world.”, shared Sam. “After attending this training I feel more prepared to lead classes and hold space for those with traumatic brain injuries and other adaptive needs in the yoga space.”
Now LYB-certified, Sam has brought back the skills to make yoga and mindfulness TBI accessible for the South Hills community! Beginning September 9th at the South Hills studio, Sam will lead a monthly, 4-part workshop series offering gentle yoga and community for people affected by TBI and their caregivers.
