LYB Mindset Facilitator | Retreat Ambassador
About me: On August 8, 2020, I survived an ischemic stroke and a hemorrhagic conversion (a brain bleed) just days later. Though my symptoms were dismissed and misdiagnosed, I’ve been grateful for miraculous outcomes and the chance to rebuild through therapy, patience, and creativity.
A mild concussion in 2023 opened the door to my work as an artist, where I explore resilience, setbacks, and the beauty of imperfection. I also raise awareness on women’s health and stroke through the American Heart Association's GoRed campaign. I walk this path with the support of my service dog, Stevie Nicks
Why LYB: I’ve gained so much from this community as a participant, facilitator, and ambassador—and I’m deeply grateful. As my healing has continued and I’ve settled into life with a brain injury, my heart has been drawn toward giving back. My hope is to create spaces where we can share openly—to learn, laugh, cry, inspire, and be inspired together.
Facilitating has given me the courage not only to embrace my own journey, but to walk alongside others in theirs. For me, this work is about community, creativity, and connection—the kind of healing that only happens when we walk together.
Superhero: My superhero is my brother, Alan, who passed away in 2017 from a glioblastoma brain tumor. During his cancer journey, he survived multiple strokes that affected his cognition, speech, and personality. Yet Alan never once complained about his deficits or treatments. He leaned into mindfulness and embodied extraordinary resilience. Though I wish I’d known more about the brain then, his presence is still part of my healing today. I trust in his energy and draw strength from his example as I continue moving forward and embracing each step of my journey.
Resources: If the concussion opened the door to a new chapter as an artist, LYB gently held my hand as I stepped through. My work leans into setbacks and honors the beauty in imperfection. I share my art journey on Instagram @stroke_maven_art and through my blog, A Stroke of Luck.
Beyond my art, I am an advocate—raising awareness of women’s health and stroke through my work with the American Heart Association, sharing my story to inspire both action and prevention. You can follow my advocacy @stroke_maven, I am an artist. I am an advocate. I believe in turning adversity into awareness, creativity, and connection.
