Spend Time Outdoors
Brain Health | 6.15.20 | By Shilo Zeller, BSC.
We know that stress, especially when chronic, is not good for our brain health. Chronic stress can lead to increased blood pressure, increased muscle tension, and feelings of anxiety and anger. There are all kinds of ways we can combat stress: meditate, laugh, be active. However, simply getting outside and being in fresh air can also provide a remedy to stress.
All day, our brains are constantly filtering, processing, and responding to stimulus. This can be quite overwhelming for our sensory processes. Being outdoors allows our mind to slow down and decreases stimulus - which allows it to work in a more natural way. Studies have shown that spending time outside can increase contentment and reduce undesirable feelings (depression, anxiety, etc.)
