“How you wake up each day and your morning routine (or lack thereof) dramatically affects your levels of success in every single area of your life.” - Hal Elrod

Summer has so many great aspects: lots of sun, more social activities, and the expectation that life will be a bit more carefree. However, the lack of consistency throughout each day and the pressure to not stress during the summer can take its toll on our mental health.

The unpredictability of each day, while exciting, may contribute to feelings of anxiety and hinder healthy, personal decision-making. What do we mean by this? When another social engagement pops up, or another event centered around unhealthy food, we tend to compromise our own health to attend events that may not be the best suited for us.

Here are our suggestions on some ways to maintain a healthy summer routine:

  • Sleep: any routine should start with a healthy sleep schedule. Trying to maintain 8 hours of sleep a night (despite increased daylight) is super important when it comes to brain health.

  • Eating: in the summer, there are so many opportunities to get together with friends and family and the food and drink options may not be the most nutritious. Make sure to still eat a healthy breakfast every morning and remember, everything in moderation.

  • Exercise: the summer sun provides a wonderful chance to try a new activity or enjoy your favorite activity in beautiful weather. Make it a point to move everyday, whether it’s a walk or a local race, just get your body moving!

Just because summer is more carefree, doesn’t mean our stance on personal health has to be. After a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast, you’ll be able to tackle every day of summer!
