What excites you about being a Clinical Affiliate with LoveYourBrain?
Becoming a Clinical Affiliate with LoveYourBrain has allowed our rehab hospital the opportunity to use a structured, research-based approach to provide yoga to our patients, their caregivers, and our local community. The focus on resilience and improving the quality of life of the participants aligns well with our values as a system. We are also excited to have the opportunity to engage in research in implementing the LoveYourBrain curriculum with the spinal cord injury population.
How does mental health play a role in a patient’s rehabilitation after TBI?
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often known as the silent epidemic and many of those affected by TBI have challenges that are not “visibly seen.” These challenges often continue in the areas of cognition, physical abilities, and behavioral/emotional skills, directly impacting mental health and a person’s rehabilitation following TBI. Mental health is a key area to be addressed early on in one’s rehabilitation and continues throughout one’s life following a TBI. LoveYourBrain allows our patient’s to connect with others, engage in physical activity, and learn new skills in a holistic person-centered approach. It provides a sense of belonging, boosts self-confidence, and achieves a sense of purpose, improving the lives of those impacted by TBI.
How do you feel yoga and mindfulness support patient mental health while in inpatient rehabilitation after a TBI?
Offering yoga and mindfulness to patients in the inpatient rehab setting allows us to address the patient as a whole at an early stage of recovery when there are many life changes occurring. We are able to support the patient and their caregivers as they adjust to the current physical and mental changes that have occurred, supporting them through any anxiety or depression that they may experience. Engaging in these practices allows patients and their caregivers to focus on resiliency during their recovery and we are excited to provide this opportunity to them.
