“This is one of the BEST parts - seeing our neighbors take note of what our runners/walkers are doing and support those who are supporting LoveYourBrain!” - Jay Heilman (he/him)
Meet Prospect High School!
On April 23rd, Prospect High School students and teacher, Jay Heilman, hosted their second annual Supporting LoveYourBrain 5K! Over 100 runners participated in the event, and 70 students and community members volunteered to ensure the event was a success for all. This year, Prospect High raised over $3,000 to support LoveYourBrain and they’ve raised over $7,000 total! We sat down with Jay, to learn more about their annual fundraiser and ‘why’ LoveYourBrain!
‘Why’ LoveYourBrain?
We support LoveYourBrain as a result of watching the documentary The Crash Reel in our Psychology classes during our neuroscience unit. Learning about the TBI Kevin suffered while training for the 2010 Winter Olympics and then his winding road to recovery inspired our students. In the fall of 2021 our students reached out to Kevin and he responded. We set up a Zoom call with him and Adam and our students were immediately hooked. After that Zoom call the students felt compelled to do something to contribute to this cause. We brainstormed (*pun intended) a couple of ideas and settled on a 5K.
How have you experienced community connection at your annual fundraiser?
Our 5K runners/walkers are almost ALL members of our community. Although students ARE allowed to run/walk, we only have a few that do. The students that are involved with the 5K are volunteering to make sure the event is successful. They are either crossing guards (there are 25 intersections throughout our course that need coverage), work our registration table (waivers need to be signed, bib numbers assigned and t-shirts distributed) and multiple hydration stations (filling cups of water to be passed out to runners/walkers as they pass) on the course that also need coverage. Since students put-on the 5K and community members run/walk it, that creates the community connection. Additionally, we are walking through the surrounding neighborhoods of the high school. Neighbors have been informed of the event through yard signs and flyers, thus many make plans to come outside as our runners/walkers pass by to cheer them on. This is one of the BEST parts - seeing our neighbors take note of what our runners/walkers are doing and support those who are supporting LoveYourBrain!
What made your fundraiser so successful, two years in a row?
I think our event is so successful because Prospect High School has a reputation of creating amazing opportunities for our students and community. When the Prospect name is attached to something, people immediately know it is going to be well supported and managed. Additionally, our students show-up! They understand the value of service and selflessly give their time and energy towards anything Prospect. Students take a lot of pride being a Prospect Knight and our community recognizes that and supports them. We are so grateful to be in such a supportive community that provides these types of opportunities for our students!
We’re so grateful to the Prospect High School student body and staff and everyone who participated in the annual Supporting LoveYourBrain 5K!
