Ben Frederick

HELLO! My name is Ben Frederick. I've been playing on a bike since my freshman year of college. I love the freedom to explore, the excitement and thrill of racing, and the wonderful people that cycling has brought into my life. Leading into my first season as a professional, I suffered a TBI. My world got turned upside down, and I had to not only learn how to be a cyclist again, but a human. My "after" had me away from bikes for a few years where I learned to navigate the world as the new person I am. With a great amount of gratitude, bikes have become part of my life again. I race cyclocross for The Small Monsters Project and when I'm not riding, you can find me surfing, roller skating, or spending time with my lovely partner and two kittens.

“After my TBI, I struggled with depression and anxiety which took root in an eating disorder that hospitalized me. My road to recovery and acceptance began when I was able to look my monsters in the face and learn to live with them. The first step was the scariest, but with the help of my friends, family and professionals, I learned to live with my monsters. To walk along side them. To have them in the open, not hidden away where they can grow and take hold.”

In 2021, Ben raised $20,831 for LYB and is on a mission to continue supporting the TBI community. In 2022, he's back with a custom Ornot jersey and bike frame raffle - and all proceeds support LYB's Ride for Resilience!

In this podcast episode, Ben shares about his lived experience with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and The Small Monsters Project!

“The Small Monsters Project came from a desire to give back and help the people who helped me, or help people in the way that I was helped after my brain injury.”
